Our Commitment to Your Privacy

At Simple Macros LLC ("Simple Macros," "we," "our," or "us"), we believe your privacy is fundamental. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our mobile application (the "App") and the website at simplemacros.com (the "Website").

By using Simple Macros, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

Information We Collect

Contact Information

• Name: Used for app functionality and analytics to personalize your experience
• Email address: Used for account management, app functionality, analytics, and marketing communications

Health and Fitness Data

• Health information: Weight, height, age, sex, dietary preferences, health goals, and meal tracking data to provide personalized nutrition recommendations
• Fitness data: Step count and activity data (via Apple Health or Google Health, with your permission) to optimize your Simple Macros plan
• Weigh-in history: Used to recalculate your targets over time

Location Data

• Precise location: Used to find nearby restaurants that align with your Simple Macros targets
• General location: Used for analytics and to provide region-appropriate meal suggestions

User Content and Activity

• Search history: Food and restaurant searches to improve recommendations
• Support inquiries: Communication with our support team

Food Database Contributions

When you add or correct a food in the Simple Macros Food Database by photographing its packaging, we collect:

• Photographs of food packaging: The nutrition facts label and the front of the package
• Product details: Product name and brand
• Nutrition values: Serving size, calories, and macros, either as you enter them or as we read them from your label photo
• Barcode: The product's barcode, used to match it to the right item
• Your user id: Attached to your contribution for attribution (including a contributor badge) and for moderation

Before a photo leaves your phone, we strip its EXIF and GPS metadata on the device, so the location where a photo was taken never reaches our servers. How this content is shared, processed, and kept is described under “The Simple Macros Food Database” below.

Meal Photos for Restaurant Estimate Refinement

Some restaurants do not publish nutrition information. For those restaurants, the App shows estimated calories for their menu items. When you log a meal from one of them, the App offers to let you take up to five photos of the food you were served. An AI vision model looks at the photos together with a description of what you ordered and estimates the calories, protein, carbs, and fat on your plate. You choose whether to use those numbers or keep the original estimate. If you take photos in this flow, we collect:

• Meal photos: Up to five photos of the food you were served
• Portion note: Your optional note about portions, for example “they gave me extra rice”
• Order details: The menu items you ordered and the options you picked
• Estimates: The App’s original estimate, the photo-based estimate, and which one you chose

Why we keep them: This is different from other food photos in the App, which are not stored. We keep these photos and estimates because they are the reference set we use to improve estimates for that restaurant’s menu items over time. We use them for two purposes: to give you a more accurate estimate for that meal, and to improve estimates for that restaurant’s menu items for all users.

How they are processed: Before a photo leaves your phone, we resize it and strip its EXIF and GPS metadata on the device, so the location where it was taken never reaches our servers. To produce the estimate, we send your photos and the description of your order to a third-party AI model provider accessed through OpenRouter. The photos are sent only for that analysis. The provider acts as our service provider (sub-processor) for that step.

Where they are stored and who can see them: Photos are stored in a private storage bucket in our Supabase backend. They are never public. They are shown back only to you, inside your own meal log. Simple Macros staff and our automated tooling read them to review and improve restaurant estimates. No other Simple Macros user ever sees them.

How long we keep them: We keep these photos and the linked observation records indefinitely, because they are the reference set used to improve estimates. You can remove the photos from a meal at any time in the App. Doing so deletes the photos and the linked observation records.

If you delete your account: The observation records and photos are detached from your account by clearing your user id, and they are kept in anonymized form. A photo of a plate of food is not treated as identifying you. If you want the photos gone as well, remove them from your meals in the App before you delete your account.

Your consent: Before you take any photo in this flow, the App shows this notice above the shutter: “Photos help us improve this restaurant’s estimates. They are private and only used for that.” Taking a photo in this flow is your consent to the collection and use described here.

Analytics: For this feature, our analytics record only counts, such as how many photos you took, how many items were in the meal, and whether you used the new values. We do not send the photos, your note, the restaurant name, dish names, or nutrition values to any analytics provider.

Technical Information

• Device information: Device type, operating system, and app version for compatibility and performance
• Usage data: How you interact with the app to improve features and user experience
• Crash and performance data: Technical logs to identify and fix issues

Information We Do Not Collect

• We do not collect video or audio recordings. The only photos we collect are the food packaging photos you choose to submit to the Simple Macros Food Database and the meal photos you choose to take for restaurant estimate refinement, both described above
• We do not collect or store payment card details. Payments are processed by Apple App Store, Google Play, or Stripe, depending on where you subscribe

How We Use Your Information

• App functionality: Provide core features like meal planning, daily macro tracking, and personalized recommendations
• Personalization: Customize your Simple Macros experience based on your goals, preferences, and progress
• Analytics: Understand app usage to improve features and develop new functionality
• Marketing: Send you relevant updates about Simple Macros features and health tips (you can opt out anytime)
• Customer support: Respond to your questions and provide assistance
• Safety and security: Protect against fraud and ensure app security
• Legal compliance: Comply with applicable laws and regulations

Information Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information in limited circumstances:

• Service providers: Trusted partners who help us operate the App (all bound by strict privacy agreements), including the AI vision providers that read your submitted label photos, described under “The Simple Macros Food Database,” and the AI model provider that reads your meal photos, described under “Meal Photos for Restaurant Estimate Refinement”
• AI assistants you connect: When you connect an assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT, it receives the data its tools return when you ask it to, as described under “Connected AI Apps” below
• Other Simple Macros users: Photos and nutrition data you contribute to the Simple Macros Food Database are shown to other users, as described under “The Simple Macros Food Database”
• Analytics partners: Usage data used to understand how the website and App perform, described under “Website and Product Analytics” below
• Advertising partners: Identifiers and subscription details used to measure our advertising, described in detail under “Advertising and Conversion Measurement” below
• Legal requirements: When required by law or to protect our users' safety
• Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets

Website and Product Analytics

We use analytics services to understand how the website and App are used, so we can see which parts of signing up work and which lose people. These providers receive information from us and process it under their own privacy policies. They are:

• Google Analytics – website traffic and reporting
• Microsoft Clarity – session replay and heatmaps, which record how you move through and interact with pages
• Amplitude – product analytics across the website and the App

What they receive is the pages you visit, the actions you take (such as starting onboarding or subscribing), and where you came from, including any campaign link or QR code you used. If you create an account, Amplitude also receives your account identifier and email address, which lets us see your use of the website and the App as one journey rather than two unconnected visitors. We do not send your health, fitness, weight, or meal-tracking data to any of these providers.

All three load only after you accept cookies on the banner shown on your first visit, and none of them load at all if you decline, if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, or, if you are in the EU or UK, until you actively accept.

Advertising and Conversion Measurement

We work with advertising partners, including Meta (Facebook and Instagram), to measure whether our ads lead people to subscribe. This section describes exactly what we collect for that purpose and what we share.

What We Collect

• Advertising cookies: _fbc, which records that you arrived from a Meta ad, and _fbp, an identifier for your browser. Both are set by the Meta Pixel and are described in our Cookie Policy
• Subscription details: The plan you chose and the amount charged

What We Share with Meta

Some information is sent from your browser by the Meta Pixel as you use the site, and some is sent from our servers once a subscription is actually paid for, which is typically about a month after your first visit. Together, this may include a hashed (irreversibly encoded) version of your email address, the _fbc and _fbp cookie values, and the amount of your subscription. We never share your plaintext email address with Meta, and we never share your health, fitness, weight, or meal-tracking data with advertising partners.

How Long We Keep It

We store these identifiers with your subscription record only until the purchase has been reported, which is normally about 30 days. They are deleted once that is done. You can request deletion at any time by contacting us at support@simplemacros.com.

Your Choices

You can decline advertising cookies from the banner shown on your first visit, which stops the Meta Pixel from loading and prevents these cookies from being set. If you are in the EU or UK, nothing loads until you accept. We also honor the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal, so if your browser sends one we treat it as a decline. You can additionally block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or adjust your ad preferences directly with Meta.

The Simple Macros Food Database

The Simple Macros Food Database is a shared catalog of foods that our users help build. When you add or correct a food by photographing its packaging, your contribution becomes part of this shared database so other users can find and use it. Here is how that works.

Automatic label reading (AI processing)

When you submit a photo of a nutrition facts label, we send that image to a third-party AI vision provider that reads the nutrition values automatically, so you do not have to type them in yourself. We currently use one of OpenRouter, Anthropic, or OpenAI for this. Your image is transmitted to the provider only to process your submission, and these providers act as our service providers (sub-processors) for that step.

Sharing with other users (community display)

Submitted package photos and nutrition data (product name, brand, serving size, calories, macros, and barcode) are shared with and shown to other Simple Macros users. When several products share the same barcode, for example after a manufacturer reformulates a product, other users see the submitted photos so they can pick the right version. This community display is the whole point of the feature. We do not sell contributed photos or nutrition data to advertisers, and we never use them for advertising.

Your license to us

When you contribute a photo or food data, you keep ownership of what you submit and grant Simple Macros a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, use, display, and share that content so it can become part of the Simple Macros Food Database and be shown to other users. This mirrors the consent you agree to in the app at the moment you submit.

How long we keep contributions

Contributions become part of the shared database and are kept for as long as that database exists, which may be indefinitely, even if you later stop using Simple Macros or delete your account. This is because other users may rely on the food entry you added or corrected. You can ask us to remove your contributions at any time by contacting support@simplemacros.com, and we will review your request. If you delete your account, your personal account data is deleted as described under “Data Retention” below; food entries and photos you contributed may remain in the shared catalog, and on request we will remove them or de-identify them by removing your attribution.

Reporting and moderation

You can report a food entry or photo that is inaccurate, objectionable, or does not belong. We review reports and can correct or remove entries, remove photos, and restrict or suspend accounts that misuse the feature. The rules that apply to contributed content are set out in our Terms of Service.

Your Privacy Rights

European Economic Area (GDPR)

If you are in the EEA, you have additional rights including the right to restrict processing, object to processing, and lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. Our legal basis for processing is your consent and legitimate interest in providing the service.

California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion, and opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell your personal information for money. As described under “Advertising and Conversion Measurement,” we do share advertising identifiers with Meta to measure our advertising, which California law may treat as “sharing” for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can opt out by declining advertising cookies in our cookie banner, by enabling the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser, which we honor automatically, or by contacting us at support@simplemacros.com.

Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encryption, secure servers, and regular security audits. However, no system is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. You may request deletion of your data at any time by contacting us at support@simplemacros.com. We will delete your data within 30 days of a verified request, unless we are required by law to retain it.

Children's Privacy

Simple Macros is designed for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we discover we have collected such information, we will delete it immediately. The same minimum age applies to contributing content to the Simple Macros Food Database.

International Users

If you use Simple Macros outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in the US. By using our App, you consent to this transfer and processing.

Third-Party Services

The App integrates with Apple Health and Google Health to read step count and activity data. These integrations are opt-in and governed by Apple's and Google's respective privacy policies. We only access the specific health data types you authorize.

When you contribute to the Simple Macros Food Database, we use a third-party AI vision provider (currently one of OpenRouter, Anthropic, or OpenAI) to read the nutrition values from your label photo. Your image is transmitted to that provider to process your submission. See “The Simple Macros Food Database” above.

When you take photos of a meal for restaurant estimate refinement, we send those photos and a description of your order to a third-party AI model provider accessed through OpenRouter. The photos are sent only to produce the estimate. See “Meal Photos for Restaurant Estimate Refinement” above.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes through the App or via email. Your continued use of Simple Macros after changes indicates your acceptance of the updated policy.
